History
COD Roadrunner Radio formerly known as KCOD has been an integral part of the Department of Arts and Media since it was launched in 2011. Laurilie Jackson, Instructor of Media Production and Faculty Advisor started working with her radio and television students who began creating content and airing their work over a small frequency that was heard only on the Palm Desert campus. Students soon formed a club, choose their staff and eventually built a nationally recognized radio station that quickly grew into a thriving media outlet where students got practical broadcasting, production and management experience. The station gives students a voice and a chance to share their stories. COD Roadrunner Radio's tagline is "your music, your voice, your station."
The station has rebranded for the Fall 2022 semester with a new name and student-created logo following a two-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic. COD Roadrunner Radio will feature fresh student segments and shows and a variety of great music, including indie, pop, jazz, country, Latin and R&B. The station is now only online and can be heard at www.codroadrunnerradio, TuneIn Online and the TuneIn app. Prior to COVID-19, listeners could tune in at AM 1450 and FM 99.9 on KCOD Coachella FM.
“Our media students, their peers and the Coachella Valley benefit from having a college radio station,” Jackson said. “I’m thrilled that we are in a place where we can reinvest in and relaunch this valuable program. I’m excited to see what our students come up with and watch them find their voices.”
KCOD over the years has received numerous national awards including being nominated for Best Community College Radio Station in the country for four years. Jackson was also named a finalist for “Best Radio Faculty Advisor" in the United States in 2020 by the respected Intercollegiate Broadcasting System.
The switch to COD Roadrunner Radio is an exciting opportunity to begin a new, brighter post-pandemic chapter for the station. With new students, staff and being back in person, stay tuned for the new and exciting sounds, of students and community programmers.
“Our media students deserve this new chapter,” said Superintendent/President Martha Garcia, Ed.D. “This program is a prime example of the hands-on training we provide at College of the Desert. We have coupled classroom lessons with real-life application in a way that sets our students up for success and emboldens them to go after their academic and professional goals.”
Setting the tone for the station’s relaunch is the new logo, which was designed by student Stephanie Kelly. Kelly’s artwork was selected from several submissions created by students in the Arts and Media Department.
